On the way to innovation – 6 Thinking Hats method

  • by

Structuring the thinking process

The 6 Thinking Hats method was introduced to the world in 1985 by Dr. Edward de Bono, who created it while thinking about improving critical thinking techniques. He felt that there needed to be a better method that would produce a more effective and organized result.

The 6 Thinking Hats method is based on the concept of lateral (multi-track) thinking, which means that people using this technique can look at a given problem from different perspectives, which significantly structures the thinking process and increases productivity and creativity in a team.

How can the 6 Thinking Hats method help bring innovation to our business?

When working on a new project, it is often the case that traditional methods such as brainstorming or individual deliberation are not effective. This is because our decisions are influenced by emotions, impressions, and logical thinking. The moment we push all these factors aside, our mind begins to form asymmetrical patterns that enhance our ability to think innovatively and creatively.

The 6 Thinking Hats method allows us to see and analyse specific situations from different perspectives, giving session participants the chance to see new possibilities and make seemingly non-existent connections. This method is also the basis for communication between team members and creates the right space for innovation and exploration of new solutions, which is very important when introducing a new project or idea in business.

How does this work exactly?

Six Thinking Hats method uses the concept of six hats, each one a different colour and representing different roles in the discussion. These colors are:

– Blue – process

– Yellow – benefits

– Green – creativity

– Black – cautions

– Red – emotions

– White – facts

Participants take on 6 different roles, which allows them to analyse an issue from 6 different perspectives. During the discussion, participants can discover new positive and negative facts that lead to a solution of the problem.

More information about the different roles in the discussion: https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newTED_07.htm

Before starting the session, participants should be introduced to the issue to be analysed and the objective to be achieved should be defined. At this stage, the facilitator should present the problem to be solved, its background, and the situational context.

The debate can be conducted in two ways:

– The first scenario could be a situation where all participants wear the same color hat

– Or each participant has a different color hat and has a different role in the debate.

What other methods can we use to increase innovative thinking?

Ideatioz Techniques will soon appear on our platform, which will be described in a methodological way and which will perhaps inspire you to implement these techniques in your company.
